On the 12th of December 2009, the Institute held its first ever convocation ceremonies for the award of post-graduate degree and diploma to all the students that had graduated from the PGS from 1997 to 2007.

The first Professorial Chair at the Institute took off in October 2009. The Chair, known as S. M. A. Belgore Professorial Chair in Law and Development is
occupied by Professor Nnamdi Aduba of the University of Jos.

The Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies is Nigeria's apex institution for research and advanced studies in law. It was a brainchild of the legal academic community established in March 1979.
